ANORAK MAGAZINE: THE BATS ISSUE

OBJECTIVE
Anorak Magazine—The Happy Mag for Kids—is a quarterly magazine published for kids ages 6+. Acting as the creative director for this project, the goal was to create the next issue and follow every guideline and design choice as close as possible. Every issue has a unique topic, and for this one, I chose bats to help destigmatize these misunderstood creatures.
APPROACH
This project required a lot of process work, creating many sketches, a competitor analysis, and creative briefs before getting to the final product. My approach was to focus more on the illustrations, since that is the true focal point of the magazines. To create the illusion of this being a collaboration by multiple artists, as the real magazines are, I illustrated in multiple different styles throughout the magazine.
There are multiple sections in this magazine. There are a few dense information pages about the discovery of echolocation, types of bats, and pollination, which is a bit much for a small child. Scattered between are lighter activity pages!
My sketches were, of course, mainly about bats. It was a challenge balancing recognizability and stylization, especially with so many distinctive art styles going on, but I ended up with a nice menagerie of styles on different ends of the spectrum.
